Toaster project in Guatemala, Central America

Greetings.

I plan to build a toaster during vacation for my university and special events.

I would like to translate the documents to spanish for presenting them to my university's lug. I would like to know if the sources(if LaTeX better) and high resolution diagrams for construction are available. I would be glad to translate and post them back. Thanks.

Freedom Toaster / BarCamp Johannesburg

What would be the best approach to arrange a Freedom Toaster for a potential planned BarCamp (http://barcamp.org) in Johannesburg?

Is there mobile Freedom Toasters available we can possibly have on-site for the duration of the event?

Who would be the best people to contact in this regard?

Toaster in Nepal

Hi:

My name is Paras Pradhan from Kathmandu Nepal. I work in a non profit organization MPP (madan puraskar pustakalaya,http://www.mpp.org.np ). Since 2003 we are working on differnet projects which are realated to Language Computing and Promoting FOSS. Some of them are: Linux Distribution development (http://nepalinux.org ), Localization/customization of FOSS , Software development, Training and Workshop on FOSS, Research etc. We are actively involved in promotion of FOSS, so it is really a good idea to have a freedom toaster in our orgnaztion and will be very helpful for our community.

Thanks
Paras Pradhan

Hello Paras, Welcome. It

Hello Paras,

Welcome.

It may please you to know that we have created a process within the project to document everything there is to know about the Freedom Toaster. The aim of this process is to empower anyone with the knowledge they need in order to build a freedom toaster of their own.

While these documents are yet to be tested and in some places they are not completely finished, they are of a level that should enable anyone in the world to build there own Freedom Toaster.

Should you take up the challenge, we would be happy to publish your exploits here on FreedomToaster.org, even write a case study of your experiences.

This said, keep in mind that you do not have to follow the suggestions, documented in the Manuals, word for word. They are guidelines.

Enjoy, let us know if you get stuck with anything.

hi, Thank you for the info

hi,

Thank you for the information. our country doesnot have the internet backbones that connects with the fibre or something else. we have to rely on the satellites for the data which is very very expensive for us.Normal oraganization lease around 64Kbps of bandwidth and pay around 300 USD/month for that. So it will not be possible for the community to download anything from the internet. Thats why i think the idea from shuttleworth foundation is brilliant. I will talk with my project director regarding fund and hope we can start this.

Thanks
Paras.

Freedom Toaster Howto

Good news, we are creating a resource pack for anyone interested in building their own Freedom Toaster. Have a look here for more information.

Toaster in Egypt

As a LUG member told me about the project, it seems pretty interesting to install here in Egypt.
Kindly contact www.eglug.org to try to arrange

possible help on toaster maintenance

Hi, i live in Paarl and waiting for our toaster. :) I'm positive if there's a toaster in Paarl the use of linux will RAPIDLY increase when people actually see commercial software really don't belong anywhere near us. You pay for buggy software, and you can't even fix it. wtf? Anyway, i'll gladly help with the maintenance of our toaster(s) when it comes to Paarl. :)

Call from the Netherlands

We think this toaster is a great invention. We love it and would like to have one available here at the "Culture House Bosch" in Arnheim. We are setting up an internetcafe here and a repair/install place for computers. Our plan is to preinstall old computers with open source software (GPL) and give them for free or for little to people who can not afford a new computer, for example people of welfare. We also want to train this people in using open source software.

Freedom Toaster in Brasilia - Brazil

FreedomToaster in Nigeria

Hey, I know it's quite a stretch but could you hook us up with a Freedom Toaster in Nigeria. Most likely venues would be in Lagos, University of Lagos and also the Obafemi Awolowo University where there's already a growing commuity of Linux afficionados and programmers. They have a website at http://www.cowblock.net. It would really help lift Nigerian programmers. Thanks a bunch

I would like to see a toaster

I would like to see a toaster in Centurion and or Midrand. This will give computer users in these areas more access to open source software, and create more awareness about what open source software is all about.

Campus Square in Melville

I'd like to see Toaster Machine at Melville Campus Square, why Melville Campus, Close to RAU and TWR campus now known as Unversity and Johnnesburg and I'm sure loads of students will be using Toaster. Since it's down the road from both campus.
I'll be one of those. Just heard of toaster today from friend.

Zambia is Ideal and Ready - SADC Region Consideration Soon?

This idea of the Freedom Toaster is great and so I would love to request you to think of expanding to the other SADC countries. OSISA should be willing to fund such an initiative.

When you think of setting up a Freedom Toaster in Zambia, do not hesitate to contact us. We are already burning CDs for Open Source and even have a Power Pro label printer bought from the USA. Our source for software is ad hoc but we are now planning to be replicating Tactical Tech's NGO-In-A-Box.

You are willing to be your partner though.

We are promoting FOSS migration among non-profits in Zambia especially youth groups.

RE: Hi there

Sepiso, please forward me you contact information, I think we might be able to work together on this project. I'm currently based in the US and looking at projects that I can get off the ground by sourcing funding here, I am currently looking at the feasibility of three freedom toaster sites in Zimbabwe, but Zambia was my next target. My email is sipho.ngwenya@quest-initiative.org or sipho@siphongwenya.com

Zambia is Ideal and Ready - SADC Region Consideration Soon?

I am a Zambian doing theology studies here in Pietermaritzburg. But I do go back to Zambian in June/July and December/January. I have greatly benefited from the availability of the Freedom Toaster at Scotsvile Mall. Knowing how expensive proprietory software is, I feel that FOSS would be the way to go for most of the African countries. I would love to be able to access the Toaster Zambia - especially in Lusaka and Ndola. It being located at either Manda Hill or the Arcade Shopping Centres would be of value to many people. A lot of people would even come to know about FOSS. I personally do share a lot about Linux and OSS with my friends, both here in South Africa and at home. I would love to see many companies and institutes adopt the FOSS. We cannot afford to keep buying expensive proprietory software when FOSS is available for all to use. I have noted that there is a toaster in Namibia. That was a great step towards the SADC connection. Please, consider putting a toaster in Lusaka and Ndola or Kitwe, ZAMBIA.

Can we have one in Singapore? =)

Hi,

Know it's a little far, but could we have one in the National University of Singapore too?

The Freedom Toaster is a great idea though.. Good going!

In the United States

I think someone should put freedom toasters in colleges in the United States. It would mak it easier to get people who don't have 3 or 4 days to wait on a download to get linux.

A new toaster

The two toasters in Cape Town are not sufficient. We need a toaster in a busy shopping mall in central Cape Town. I feel Gardens Centre, which is in the city bowl is an ideal location.

Location strategy question

I can see the logic of making freedom toasters available in universities as a starting point BUT... surely accessibility is a key consideration? Why not put them more in shopping malls where the public will notice them, wonder about them, try them out? They would also be more accessible for people who already know about them and know what they want. Universities and institutions like the CSIR are often out of the way, involve a sign-in process, finding the right place in the campus and may require that somebody be there to give you access.
Mind you, keep it the way it is because that way there'll never be a queue when I need to burn cds!

eastern cape additional locations

how about some of the smaller towns, such as East London, Umtata, Jeffery's Bay etc. in the eastern cape

East London & Grahamstown

There is a Toaster at Walter Sisulu University(Chiselhurst Campus), and one at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

There is one at Cresta Already

There is one at Cresta Already, can we close this Subject If any admin is alive :)

I want a Toaster

There is now a Toaster at Monash University South Africa, which is not that far from Cresta. It is open from 07:00 to 19:00. See http://monash.ac.za/about/travel.html for directions and a map to the campus.

UNI Peru

It would be a good place to have it here in UNI University - Lima - Peru because in FLISOL Festival of 2005 it was shown that there are a lot of people interested in Linux here

Yes. I agree. There should be

Yes. I agree. There should be a toaster in the Northgate vicinity. So, please can Northgate become one of the proposed toaster locations

Toaster near Northgate

Toaster Location - Nelspruit

Pls add Nelspruit to possible sites

I want a toaster in Chennai, India

It would be wonderful to have a toaster in a city called Chennai , in India.. it would greatly promote the open source community..

I want a toaster in Chennai, India

I also support the idea of having a Toaster in Chennai, India! It'd surely be a big booster for Open Source Community in India, specially coz Chennai and surrounding South-bound regions are the major areas where IT sector is at its peak!

Toaster in Loughborough, United Kingdom

It would be nice if we could have a toaster in my local town called Loughborough in the UK. I would be willing to find a suitable location.

Thanks

I would like have a freedom Toaster in MARIN (Pontevedra-Spain)

Hello! i live in a city in the north of Sapin (Marin - Pontevedra) and i would like to promote Free software use there, but the people who lives in haven't enough resoures and i see that your iniciative is very good for this, so, if you wish contact me, please send me a e-mail.

NELSPRUIT

NELSPRUIT PLEASE

Nelspruit

Hi, would you be willing to find a suitable venue?

The project relies on volunteers to seek out locations in their area that are publicly accessible and secure. If you are willing to be that person, then please e-mail me: jason (at) shuttleworthfoundation.org

Pietermaritzburg

I would be willing to find a suitable venue in PMB. Maybe the local University of KZN, or similar institution.Or perhaps one of the popular malls (Liberty, Cascades, Hayfields)

Pietermaritzburg please...

Sorry i realise there is one in Durban at the UNI Campus. The uni of KZN has numerous campus's throughout KZN. I am willing to find a place in Pietermaritzburg, which is quite a distance West (+- 100Km) of Durban where the previous post link pointed to. It is The Capital City of KZN (thats right Durban is not the capital) and serves the KZN Midlands Area of KZN. There are various places a freedom toaster could be placed, our library for instance is expanding, and is nearly complete. I would really like to find a spot for a Toaster in this area... What must I do to continue... potsed[at]gmail.com

Thanks to all

Thanks Jason and everyone else involved for supplying a toaster to the Hive at Scotsville Mall in PMB.

Cape Town, far south

The only two locations in Cape Town are in the Northern Suburbs (Brackenfell and Canal Walk). Somewhere in central Cape Town would be good, but I also suggest the Long Beach mall near Noordhoek. This is a central location in the South, used by the wealthy from areas such as Fish Hoek, and Noordhoek, right next to the township of Masipumelele and near to Ocean View. Lots of NGO's are active in the area. I'm advising an NGO in Masip, and am trying to persuade them not to accept the golden handcuffs of a Microsoft office solution. A Freedom Toaster in the area would be a big boost, and I'm sure would be well-used.

Long Beach Mall

I'll give you one if you can get a spot in the Long Beach Mall...

LongBeach Mall

Hi there
I could followup regarding Long Beach Mall. I will approach management.
What do you need to have a toaster?
Powerpoint, security, space, management?
I would gladly help with maintenance, installation, setup etc. I am currently a MS consultant (with over 20 years IT experience) but moving rapidly towards OS and would love to get involved in an innitative like this. I live near the Mall, in Kommetjie, so it would be easy to assist.

In Universities

Should have a toaster in each and every University Campus.

Universities

We are on our way to meeting that challenge. So far, Stellenbosch, Rhodes, KZN, Tuks, and Tshwane Tech all have Toasters. We have got Wits and Walter Sisulu Uni onboard as well.

Toaster at Universities

I work at North West University Potchefstroom campus IT department and would like to have at least 1 toaster on each of the three campuses mail me itbdpv@puk.ac.za
